It has been read on the Net that the Asus Eee PC can take the 2GB modules of Ram, Windows installations saw it so why the Xandros original installation didn't? Well, with the new release of the source code by Asus there is now the possibility to recompile the kernel of the original Xandros version so that it's capable of taking advantage of the 2GB modules. Asus Eee PC price in Europe / Preço do Asus Eee PC

Just found out about a large online German retailer that as the Eee PC at an almost direct price conversion from dollars to euros. Which is quite amazing. Posted on Cyberport.de is the price of 299€ for a White or ... Black version of the Eee PC 4G. That is excellent news. Given today exchange rate that is only about 17€ more than the 399$ price. Excellent news for the Eee PC lovers!!!

Já disponível no Cyberport.de ao preço de 299€ para a versão branca ou ... preta do Eee PC 4G. São excelentes noticias. Asus EEE PC review (updated) / Teste ao Asus EEE PC (actualizado)

You've already heard about this little piece of hardware here in the blog. It's on top of my wish list, right next in line to the Openmoko Phone the FIC Neo 1973 which I haven't talked about it yet. It's the Asus EEE PC. I've been following the launch of this revolutionary laptop. It's small, it's highly portable (only 0,92Kg or about 2 pounds) and uses Linux and other Open Source software. I don't know where to buy here in Portugal, even in Europe I only heard about a web store in England. Well, if anyone from Asus is reading, I wouldn't mind making a review if I can get my hands on one, I even have two daughters to test it with the target you aim ;) . Now seriously, I'm writing to give you notice of the first review I got my eyes on. It's from a full production model, and it was done by laptopmag.com. Go there and see why small and cheap isn't synonym of a bad product. On the contrary, they say "... Pound for pound, the best value-priced notebook on the planet." so go read it.

Vocês já leram aqui no blog sobre esta pequena peça de hardware. Está no topo da minha lista de desejos, logo ao lado do telefone que lança o Openmoko, o FIC Neo 1973 que ainda não falei sobre ele, ainda. É o Asus EEE PC. Tenho seguido de perto o lançamento deste portátil revolucionário. É pequeno, é leve (só 0,92Kg) e usa Linux e outro software Open Source. Não sei onde se poderá comprar em Portugal, ou mesmo na Europa só ainda vi numa loja online em Inglaterra. Bem, se alguém da Asus estiver a ler, eu não me importava de fazer uma review se eu conseguir meter as mãos em cima de um exemplar, eu até tenho duas filhas pequenas que são um dos publico alvo do vosso produto ;) . Agora a sério, estou a escrever para vos dar conhecimento da primeira review que consegui por os meus olhos em cima. É de um modelo de produção e foi feito pelo site da laptopmag.com. Vão lá e vejam porque é que nem sempre pequeno e barato é sinónimo de um mau produto. Pelo contrário, eles dizem "... Kg por Kg, é o melhor portátil do mundo em valor." por isso vão ler já.

Asus Eee PC + Mac OSX 10.4/5 ?

Well, you don like Windows (so strange ... LOL) but Linux also isn't for you? What about Mac OSX? Yeah? So now you can have Mac OSX on your Asus Eee PC! That's right. You can have 10.5 (Leopard) but to get a better performance it's advisable to get 10.4.8. The guys hover uneasysilence explain it better. Just awsome! And you don't need to be afraid because Asus has a remarkable recover DVD that restores your Eee PC to the standard OS with no fuss. "There are fantastic things, aren't there?" (portuguese joke!).

Bem, vocês não gostam de Windows (que estranho... LOL) mas Linux também não é para vocês? E que tal Mac OSX? Sim? Então agora já podem ter Mac OSX no vosso Asus Eee PC! É verdade. Podem ter o Mac OSX 10.5 (Leopardo) mas para ter uma performance melhor é aconselhável a 10.4.8. Os rapazes do uneasysilence explicam melhor. Simplesmente genial! E não precisam de estar receosos porque a Asus tem um DVD de recuperação bestial que reinstala o Eee PC para o OS standard sem problema nenhum. "Há coisas fantásticas, não há?". LOL!!!

Asus Eee PC 1001 !!

How! So soon! Another one to keep the revolution!! Asus was showing everyone, at Computex, but without great fuss, the Eee PC 1001 (the 10'' version of the laptop that is revolutionizing the IT world). It looks great and it that new extra screen space I think the few nodding heads are going to go way. Another good news is that it is, apparently, crammed in the same 7'' form factor. Excellent news!! Epá! Tão cedo! Mais um para continuar a revolução!! A Asus estava a mostrar, na Computex, mas sem grande alarido, o Eee PC 1001 (a versão de ecrã de 10'' do portátil que está a revolucionar o mundo das TI). Parece muito bom e com o novo espaço disponível aqueles acenos de cabeça negativos que alguns faziam vão desaparecer. Outra boa noticia é que, aparentemente, o ecrã não aumenta o tamanho do portátil. É do mesmo tamanho do portátil de 7''. Excelentes noticias!! Noticia encontrada no Engadget.

Ubuntu Home Server

It was luck that drove me to this project, Ubuntu Home Server (UHS). Currently it's only a community project. But, has the Ubuntu community already showed, that isn't anything to be diminished by. According to the project page they expected to have a version by Gutsy Gibbon release of Ubuntu or perhaps Gutsy+1 at the latest. At the moment, the status is "The project was recently launched. Presently the specifications are under heavy development and work on several components has begun.". Some of the proposed features are awesome, like: Simple Storage Space Management - It will be easy to add new disk space to a UHS machine; Streaming services - The UHS server will be able to stream media across the network to client computers, uPNP ,itunes,...; TV Server - A centralized method of tv scheduling and recording would give a major advantage over MS WHS / MCE. Probably MythTV back end would be the way to go here.
Of course, other "standard" options will be available like Print Server, File server, Centralized Backup, etc. Looks good. Very good indeed. Keep up the good work guys.

Foi a sorte que me levou a este projecto , Ubuntu Home Server (UHS). Neste momento é um projecto totalmente comunitário. Mas, como a comunidade Ubuntu já nos habituou, isso não é nenhum contra. De acordo com a página do projecto, eles esperavam ter uma versão pelo lançamento do Gutsy Gibbon ou o mais tardar no Gutsy Gibbon+1. Neste momento o status do projecto é: "O projecto começou recentemente. Actualmente as especificações estão sob desenvolvimento activo e o trabalho em vários componentes já começou.". Algumas das características são espetaculares, como por exemplo: Simple Storage Space Management - será fácil adicionar um novo disco a uma máquina UHS; Streaming services - O servidor UHS será capaz de fazer streaming para computadores cliente, uPNP ,itunes,...; TV Server - Um método centralizado de programar e gravar TV. Provavelmente o MythTV back end será o caminho a seguir.
Claro que coisas standard como Servidor de Impressão, Servidor de Ficheiros, Backups centralizados, etc. estarão disponíveis. Parece bom. Muito bom. Continuem o bom trabalho.

Google Android Video Demo

Well, Google has provided, as promised, their SDK for Android, the so much talked "GPhone". And for what I've been seeing it's quite an SDK! I'm a big OpenMoko fan. Been there since the beginning always following the news and development but the smart phone panorama has changed during OpenMoko development. And Android is a big change. Not only seems to be very strong in features and integration it's, to figure here on the blog, Open Source! I'm very excited in seeing how companies/individuals will explore this much potential that the Android has and to see how OpenMoko can/will capitalize on the Android. Bom, o Google disponibilizou, como prometido, o SDK para o Android, o tão falado "GPhone". E pelo que tenho visto é um belo SDK!. Eu sou um grande fã do OpenMoko. Tenho acompanhado desde o inicio o projecto, segui sempre as notícias e os desenvolvimentos mas o panorama dos smart phones mudou muito durante o desenvolvimento do OpenMoko. E o Android é uma grande mudança. Não só parece ser muito forte em termos de funcionalidades e integração, é, para aparecer aqui no blog, Open Source! Eu estou muito curioso em ver como vão as empresas/indivíduos explorar o potencial do Android e de ver como o OpenMoko pode/vai capitalizar nas possibilidades do Android. Vão até aqui para ver um vídeo de demonstração do Android.

OLPC Give One Get One / OLPC Compre Um Dê Um

This one could be a revolution. It's the piece of hardware that led to the Intel's ClassMate PC, and even to some extent to my beloved Asus Eee PC. It revolutionary in many ways, hardware wise were new technologies were developed (new screen, new power generator,etc.) , and software wise so that networks (mesh network) and software adapt to the people and to the environment that it is supposed to "live" in. And if the aim of the project prevails, revolutionary because will give the millions of children of today in under developed countries the generational leap they need and also their country's need to change the world of today. I, for myself, only wish this project comes true in it's goal. More specifically, there is the this new program where you can buy one at a higher price but that means you're giving one to a children, for free. Great project!

P.S.: And, obviously, the software is Open Source. Unfortunately it's US and Canada only.

Este pode ser bem uma revolução. É uma peça de hardware que levou outros a surgirem como o ClassMate PC da Intel, e até alguma da inovação do meu adorado Asus Eee PC. É revolucionário de muitas formas, em termos de hardware desenvolveram-se novas tecnologias (para o écran, gerador de electricidade, etc.), e também de software de forma a adaptar as redes (redes em mesh) e o software em si ao diferente habitat em que vai ser usado. E se o objectivo do projecto prevalecer, revolucionário porque dará a milhões de crianças em países subdesenvolvidos o salto geracional que necessitam e que os seus países necessitam para mudar o mundo de hoje. Eu, pessoalmente, desejo que o projecto se realize. Mais especificamente, existe agora o projecto de disponibilizar a venda a qualquer pessoa a um preço superior, mas que inclui que por cada compra seja entregue outro OLPC a uma criança, grátis. Grande Projecto!

P.S.: E, como é óbvio, o software que lá corre é Open Source. Infelizmente é só para os EUA e Canadá.

These are the names to retain and to look for in the upcoming months. Android is the name of a startup firm that Google has aquired in 2005. It has been in the core development of the "GPhone", which in fact is, has we got to know after the yesterday announcement, a software stack highly integrated with Google services. It's completely Open Source. Open Handset Alliance (OHA for friends) it's no more than a set of, for now, 34 members that include names that are top players in their areas of business. From mobile chips we have Broadcom, Intel, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments. In hardware HTC, LG, Motorola e a Samsung. Operators like T-Mobile, Sprint, China Mobile, NTT DoCoMo e KDDI, Telecom Italia e Telefónica. And many others in other areas. Google doesn't want, or at least isn't showing, a will to commercialize a branded hardware phone. According to Andy Rubin, “We are not building a GPhone; we are enabling 1,000 people to build a GPhone.”. Theres also talk about a phone Google's been showing Android. It's an HTC code name "Dream". HTC is thinking in launching "Dream" commercially in 2008. It's known that "Dream" has 3 x 5 inches, touchscreen, navigational controls in the base and a swivel keyboard.

This little wonder is making a big splash on the IT world. Personally I had anticipated it because it's a great, excuse me, awesome combination of price/features/weight/software. To me, as I already stated, it's very important that is loaded with Open Source software. It shows how versatile it can be and also a proof of usability and easy to use, contrary to the lot's of (Microsoft bought opinion makers) opinions. I will most probably buy one for me, as soon as it is available in Portugal, but the "excuse" will be that it's great for my two daughters ;) . Good unbox video and pictures.

Esta pequena maravilha está a ter uma grande repercussão no mundo das tecnologias de informação. Pessoalmente sempre o antecipei pois a combinação de características/preço/peso/software é simplesmente excelente. Para mim, como já anteriormente o referi, é muito importante o facto de estar carregado com software Open Source. Mostra como o software Open Source é versátil e também é prova da usabilidade e facilidade de uso do mesmo ao contrário do que muitos (apoiantes pagos da Microsoft) apregoam. Vou, muito provavelmente, comprar um assim que puder/estiver disponível em Portugal, mas a "desculpa" vai ser de que é muito bom para as minhas duas filhas ;) . Um bom vídeo e fotografias de desempacotamento.
