Well, in the land of Linux when you delete a file, meaning not send it to the trash, it's a bit hard to get that file again. Well, just so that you can always recover that only becomes important :) after you delete it :) then Magic Rescue comes in and Linux.com tells you how.

Sun buys Innotek / Sun adquire Innotek

Maybe some of you are saying Ino... who? Innotek is the maker of VirtualBox a virtualization software like VMWare but it as a Open Source base and a Open Source version. After getting their hand on MySQL Sun is really on a Open Source buying spree. Hope this doesn't kill VirtualBox on the long run. More details (Brazilian Portuguese link) here. Innotek é quem faz o software VirtualBox que é um software de virtualização, assim como o VMWare mas a diferença é que tinha a base e uma versão Open Source. Your drive isn't reading your old backup DVD anymore? That CD with your summer photos of some years back isn't playing anymore? Simcity is Micropolis and Open Source! / Simcity é Micropolis e Open Source!

The OLPC project convinced Electronic Arts to give up on the source code of Simcity and they did (well it has a lot of history behind this, but if you want to know all about it go here). And so, by changing the name for trademark reasons Micropolis has born! It's the original Simcity that has been ported to the OLPC project XO, and it's open to the world because it's a ... Open Source project! So may days playing this... snif! ;) Go get it here.

O projecto OLPC convenceu a Electronic Arts a libertar o código fonte do Simcity e eles fizeram-no (bem, tem muita história por trás disto, mas se quiserem os pormenores todos vão ver aqui). E assim, mudando o nome por razões de registo de marcas, nasceu o Micropolis! É o Simcity original que foi portado para o XO da OLPC e está aberto ao mundo porque... é um projecto Open Source! Passei tantos dias a jogar a isto...snif! ;) Vão buscá-lo aqui.

Liberation Fonts

Tired of having to go get Microsoft Fonts and feel bad about it? So do I, so let's make a change and use instead the Liberation Fonts. It's a set of fonts Red Hat made that mimic Microsoft ones and released to the Open Source world. (Thank you very much Red Hat!I really mean it). With this script is very simple. Go get them, I did.

Cansados de ter que ir buscar as fontes da Microsoft e sentirem-se mal com isso? Eu estou, por isso vamos mudar de atitude e usar as Liberation Fonts. É um conjunto de fontes que a Red Hat criou e que copiam o tamanho e o estilo das da Microsoft e depois lançou-as para o mundo Open Source. (Obrigado Red Hat! A sério!). Com este script não é difícil. Vão buscá-las, eu fui.

French Police move's to ubuntu Desktops / Policia Francesa muda os Desktops para o Ubuntu

What?! are the French Police smarter than any other? Well, maybe, but one thing is for sure it's more "open" :) ! Seriously, they are making the move to Ubuntu Desktop. It's about 70000 Desktops! 3 reasons, says their Colonel Nicolas Geraud, deputy director of the gendarmerie's IT department, to do the move: "diversify suppliers and reduce the force's reliance on one company, the second is to give the gendarmerie mastery of the operating system and the third is cost". The choice was obvious, since in 2005 they open source its office applications and in 2006 its Internet browsers and its email. "The move away from licensed products is saving the gendarmerie about seven million euros (10.3 million dollars) a year for all its PCs." if this is not a very, very solid reason, then what is? O quê?! a Policia Francesa é mais intelegente do que as outras? Bem, se calhar sim, mas uma coisa é certa, é mais "aberta" :) ! Agora a sério, eles vão mudar todos os seus Desktops para Ubuntu. São só cerca de 70000 Desktops! 3 razões para isso, diz o Coronel Nicolas Geraud, Director do Departamento de TI da Policia: diminuir a dependência a uma só companhia e diversificar os fornecedores, dar poder à Policia sobre o seu sistema operativo e a terceira é o custo. A escolha era um pouco óbvia pois já em 2005 eles mudaram toda a suite de Office para Open Source, em 2006 mudaram o Browser e o Email client. A passagem de produtos licenciados para produtos Open Source economizaram 7 milhões de euros (10.3 milhões de dólares) por ano para todos os PC's.
