Mozilla Labs Prism

Today I came across a description of a new ... "application"?, according to Mozilla Labs. It's called Prism. So what is Prism? As they describe it it's like this: "Prism is an application that lets users split web applications out of their browser and run them directly on their desktop.". Simple isn't it? No? From what I understood it's like having your Gmail tab of Firefox lose on your Desktop in a window just like any other Desktop application with all the goodness that it implies, like "accessible with Control-Tab, Command-Tab, Alt-Tab and Exposé, just like desktop apps", "...providing support for offline data storage and access to 3D graphics hardware". Still confuse, go to their page and see for yourself. One thing that let me down was that right now it's Windows only! Imagine! They say, Linux and Mac are comming soon, but Windows first from Mozilla?!

Hoje deparei-me com a descrição de uma nova ... "aplicação"?
, de acordo com a Mozilla Labs. Chama-se Prism. Então o que é o ou a Prism? Como eles a descrevem, é assim: "Prism é uma aplicação que deixa os utilizadores tirar as aplicações Web do browser e corre-las directamente no seu Desktop.". Simples não é? Não? Do que eu percebi é como ter, por exemplo, a tab do Firefox com o Gmail à solta no Desktop numa janela como qualquer outra aplicação normal de Desktop com todas as vantagens que isso pode trazer, como por exemplo "acessivél através do Control-Tab, Command-Tab, Alt-Tab e Exposé, como as aplicações de Desktop. Ainda confuso, vá até à página deles e veja voçê mesmo. Uma coisa que me deixou desapontado é que nestre momento ainda só têm a versão Windows! Imaginem! Dizem que a versão Linux e Mac está a caminho, mas vir primeiro a versão Windows da parte da Mozilla?!

Ubuntu 7.10 and the Asus EEE Pc / Ubunto 7.10 e o Asus EEE Pc

Holly Cow !! There are some persons who have the sweetest job's in earth! Rupert Goodwins from ZD Net UK is one of them. So he get is hand on the most talked piece of hardware of the Internet right now and he manages to do what I have been dreaming for the last 2 or 3 month's. Stuff Ubuntu into the Assus EEE Pc. That's pure, simple, straight luck!!! Or not!! :) According to him, Ubuntu manages to do a good job. It's not slow. Has some quirks but nothing too important. Imagine Xubuntu or Fluxbuntu. Caramba!! Há pessoas com muito sorte neste mundo e que têm o melhor emprego do mundo em certas alturas. Rupert Goodwins da ZD Net UK é um deles. Ele consegue meter as mãos ma peça de hardware mais falada da Internet neste momento e consegue fazer o que eu tenho andado a sonhar nos últimos 2 ou 3 meses. Meter Ubuntu no Asus EEE Pc. É pura, simples, sorte!! Ou não! :) De acordo com ele o Ubuntuaté se porta muito bem. Não é lento. Tem um ou outro problema, mas nada de muito importante e que não se ultrapasse. Imaginem com Xubuntu ou Fluxbuntu. Vão até aqui para lerem sobre isto. E leiam os comentários para mais informação sobre a instalação. E aqui para umas imagens.

Adopt ODF / Adoptar o ODF

ODF, for the people who doesn't know what it is, stands for Open Document Format. It's a aproved standard and the news here (warning: PDF) is about South Africa set their official standard for government communications. This is, for me at least, good news. Because think about this, .DOC files are "standard" because MS Office is "standard" in PC (unfortunately may I had, but not in mine). So imagine the day where Microsoft stops developing their "standard" and adopts a new one, please note that this is not far fetched since it has already happened with their latest Office 2007 which has a new standard for their document type. You have two choices, keep your software in the dark ages because you can't upgrade, because your new software doesn't read the "old" .DOC format. Your thousand of documents are worthless! With a open format, that is standard, this is not a problem. Anyone has access and can create a way to read your documents (if you want of course) and write to other format you want (If it is open too, of course). The example above is just one situation, many can emerge from a closed, non standard (for real), format. So has I sad before, to me it is a great and very important decision from the South African government, which I salute. Keep going like this and hope others too open their eyes.

ODF, para pessoas que não saibam o que é, significa, em Inglês, Open Document Format, qualquer coisa como Formato de Documento Aberto em Português. É um standard aprovado e é notícia hoje, aqui (Aviso: PDF), porque a África do Sul aprovou-o como standard das comunicações do seu Governo. Isto, para mim, são boas noticias. Porque pensem sobre isto. O formato .DOC é "standard" porque o MS Office é "standard" nos PC's (infelizmente, deixem-me acrescentar, mas não é no meu). Agora imaginem o dia em que a Microsoft deixa de desenvolver o seu "standard" .DOC e adopta um novo, isto não é imaginação minha pois a Microsoft já o fez no Office 2007 onde o "standard" de ficheiro é outro. Sobram duas hipóteses, ou não faz upgrade e o software vai caindo na "idade da pedra" porque não pode fazer upgrade porque o novo não lê o formato "standard antigo" .DOC. As suas centenas, ou milhares, de documentos são inutilizadas! Com um formato aberto e standard essa questão não se põe. Uma pessoa pode desenvolver uma maneira de ler o seu documento (caso assim deseje, claro) e escrever noutro format que queira (desde que também aberto, claro). O exemplo acima é só uma de inúmeras que podem surgir com um formato fechado e não standard. Como referi antes, isto é uma boa, e muito importante, decisão da África do Sul, que eu saúdo. Continuem assim e esperemos que outros abram os olhos.

Gmail e o IMAP / Gmail and the IMAP

Tem corrido pela Net que o Google tem, finalmente, o protocolo IMAP disponivél no GMAIL. Dizem que nem todas as contas têm mas vão ter, e como ainda não testei na minha também não faço ideia se tenho ou não de qualquer forma quero deixar aqui uma tabela que relaciona as acções que executamos no programa de email e as acções correspondentes no GMAIL:

It has been around the Internet that Google has, finally, the IMAP protocol in the GMAIL accounts. They say that not all accounts have them now, but later will do, and since I haven't tested on mine account, so I too don't make a clue if it's there or not. Anyway I would like to share a table that gives relations between the actions we execute on the email program and the actions GMAIL does on our account:

Lançado o Gimp 2.4 / Gimp 2.4 Launched

Cerca de 3 anos depois e com muitas novas funcionalidades, já saiu o GIMP 2.4. Foi ontem, e como é que isso me escapou? Bem, ontem estive sem acesso à Net durante bastante tempo e por isso passou-me ao lado... até hoje, claro! Mas a novidade não se resume a ser só a nova versão 2.4. Também têm um novo layout do site. Quanto a mim, e apesar de ainda só ter navegado um pouco por lá, parece melhor. Quanto às novas funcionalidades são tantas que o melhor mesmo é lerem as release notes. Do que li e do que já vi, é um excelente passo em frente. E com o novo projecto que o GIMP lançou com o objectivo de mudar a interface (um grande contra para muitos utilizadores) vamos, de certeza, ter muitas e boas novidades da parte deste projecto.

It as been around 3 years and with a lot of new features, GIMP 2.4 has come out to the wild. It was yesterday and how did that passed trough me? Well, yesterday I lost Net access for a long time... and that's why I didn't mention it until today. But the news don't resume to the GIMP 2.4. They also have a new layout on their website. For me, and besides just a few time navigating on it, it's better. About the new features they are so many that it's better to read the release notes. From what I already read and seen, it's a good step forward. And adding to that the new project launch to make the interface (a very troublesome "feature" that many users complaint) better we are, for sure, going to have many good news from the part of these guys.

Ubuntu 7.10 Experiência de Upgrade / Ubuntu 7.10 Upgrade Experience

Ora o Ubuntu 7.10 já foi lançado e como tal já está feito o download. E hoje fiz, pela primeira vez, um upgrade. E não foi um upgrade qualquer, foi na minha máquina de trabalho. E como pela Net fora já terão lido todas as novas opções e aplicações, etc. e
u vou-me dedicar mais à realidade de um upgrade. Ou seja, vou contar como correu o meu. E foi assim:
Comecei pelo download da iso, mais precisamente a versão alternate (ubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso). Depois de esperar pelo download, quando já o tinha localmente no disco decidi fazer um mount à imagem iso, para quem não está, ainda, muito dentro destas coisas, não foi mais do que "montar" a iso de maneira a poder aceder aos ficheiros como se tivesse uma nova drive no sistema. É feito de maneira simples: mount -o loop -t iso9660 [ficheiro iso] [mount point]. Depois para abreviar corri o seguinte comando: gksu "sh /tmp/cdrom2/cdromupgrade" e está a correr o assistente de upgrade. Demorou cerca de 20m a 25m num PC com um Intel Core 2 Duo 6400 + 2Gb Ram. Tirando o facto de me ter parado duas vezes a pergunta sobre se substituía ou não dois ficheiro de configuração que eu tinha manualmente alterado, foi directo.
No fim pede um reboot (novo kernel, etc assim obriga). E agora o que sinto eu com a mudança? Bem, logo de inicio o VMware Server não funcionava (claro, não tinha os módulos no novo kernel) e tinha duas hipóteses: pelo Synaptic remover e voltar a instalar (talvez porque não testei) ou ir buscar a versão mais recente (versão 1.0.4) do que a do repositório da Canonical. Fui pela segunda. Vai de remover o que estava, esperar pelo download de +-100Mb e depois instalar. Normalíssimo, instalar com "sudo ./vmware-install.pl", yes + bla,bla,bla a tudo (já tinha headers de kernel e build-essential instalados...). et voilá! sem ser necessário qualquer restart a serviços, já para nem falar de reboots característicos de outras plataformas... de novo o meu VMware Server a funcionar! Outras novidades sentidas foram: novas pastas na Home (Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos), Notificação de email pelo Evolution. No menu System-Preferences-Indexing Preferences temos as opções para o novo indexador, o Tracker. Bem explicadas, as opções, e muito legíveis. Uma boa surpresa.

Além disso, nunca consegui por o Beagle a fazer Indexing no meu evolution ligado ao Exchange e o Tracker foi de caras sem eu sequer ter que fazer alguma coisa. Mas no Beagle devia ser aselhice minha. Uma ligeira (aparentemente, sem método "cientifico" a comprovar) melhoria na resposta do sistema. E por enquanto é isto. Tudo o resto funciona sem problemas. De resto as outras novidades, Efeitos no Desktop, Configurador de X, etc. já foram explicadas no próprio lançamento e podem verificar vocês mesmos. Espero que tenha dado alguma "segurança" a quem quer fazer o upgrade. Fiquei muito bem impressionado pelo upgrade, no geral funcionou como devia.
P.S.: Tudo isto sem ter de deixar de trabalhar no próprio PC. Há coisas fantásticas, não há?

UPDATE: Depois do upgrade o VLC que tinha instalado "desapareceu". Tive que voltar a instalar. Também hoje, Segunda tinha um upgrade parcial (400Mb) á minha espera. Hummmm... Não gostei muito disto... Se fiz o upgrade a partir da iso alternate para quê mais 400Mb?

Well, Ubuntu 7.10 was launched e as such I've downloaded. And today, for the first time, I've made an upgrade. But it wasn't a simple upgrade, it was my work machine. And because in other places of the Net you've already heard about the new options and applications, etc. I will dedicate to the real part of upgrade. Meaning I will tell about how my upgrade went on. And it was like this:
Started by downloading the ISO, more precisely a alternate version (ubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso). Then, after waiting for the download, when I already had it locally I decided to do a mount on the ISO image, to anyone who is not, yet, familiar, what this does is allow to open the ISO and work has a simple folder or drive with the ISO files in it. It's done with this simple command: mount -o loop -t iso9660 [iso file] [mount point]. Then to abbreviate I ran the following command: gksu "sh /tmp/cdrom2/cdromupgrade" and the upgrade assistant started. It took about 20m to 25m in a PC with Intel Core 2 Duo 6400 + 2Gb Ram. Beside the fact that it asked to replace 2 system files I had changed by hand it run straight up. At the end it ask to reboot (new kernel, etc.). And now what do I feel in the change? Well, for starters VMware Server wasn't working (of course, no modules for the new server). So I had two choices: trough Synaptic Uninstall and Install or more recent version than Canonical's repository from the VMware website. I went for the second. Remove the installed one, download the new one, +-100Mb, and then install. Just plain normal "sudo ./vmware-install.pl", yes + bla,bla,bla to all (I already had kernel headers and build-essential installed...). et voilá! without restart services or reboots so characteristic from another platform... again VMware Server working! Other news felt were: new Folders at the Home (Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos), notification of new email from Evolution (see picture above). at the System-Preferences-indexing Preferences menu we have the options to the new indexer, Tracker. Well explained, the options, and very readable.(see pictures above) A nice surprise. Besides, I never got Beagle to index my Evolution account on Exchange but with Tracker was plain simple. But with Beagle it must have been my error. A slight (apparent, without cientific method to prove) performance improvement in system response. And for now this is it. everything else works. The other news, like Desktop Effects, X Configurator, etc. have been explained in the launch and you can see for yourself. I hope to give some "security" to who is thinking about making the upgrade. I was well impressed because it worked has it should.
P.S.: All this without having to stop working in the machine. There are fantastic thing, aren't there?

UPDATE: After the upgrade the VLC Media Player that I had installed was "gone". I had to install it again. Also today, Monday, I had a partial upgrade (400Mb) waiting for me. Hummmm... Didn't like it very much... If I had the upgrade done from the alternate iso... why more 400Mb?

Dell Inspiron 1420n com Ubuntu / Dell Inspiron 1420n with Ubuntu

Ars technica, tem um bom artigo sobre um portátil Dell Inspiron 1420n com o Ubuntu pré-instalado. É uma review extensa, que passa pela performance, o hardware, a gestão de energia (tão importante num portátil) e até o particionamento. Em jeito de conclusão, eles consideram numa escala de 1 a 10 um 7, o que me parece muito razoável, e que para um utilizador que já tenha algum conhecimento de Linux é uma sólida escolha. Para um comprador totalmente novo existem alguns pormenores a ter em conta. Só detestam o facto de ser... castanho! Podem ver a review aqui.

Ars technica has a good article about a Dell Inspiron 1420n laptop with Ubuntu pre-installed. It's a extended review that goes trough performance, hardware, power management (so important in a laptop) and even partitioning. In conclusion, they consider the laptop a 7 in a 0 to 10 scale, which to me it's very reasonable, and they say that to a user that as Linux knowledge it's a solid choice. To a first time Linux user that are some glitch's to perfect. The only thing they hate is the fact of being... brown! You can read the review here.

Asus EEEPC

Apesar de, pelo que tem circulado na Internet, as versões para o público ficarem um pouco longe dos 199$ anunciados pela Asus há uns meses, começou hoje a comercialização de um portátil, para mim, revolucionário. Não tem disco rígido, nem drive de CD/DVD. Mas tem a seu favor imensos pormenores, boa autonomia (2.5h a 3.5h), excelente peso (+-920g), inicia-se em +-15seg, o disco é de Flash Ram, tem Wifi, Ethernet, leitor de cartões SD, em alguns modelos camera integrada, enfim uma panóplia enorme de pormenores que culmina em ser carregado de software, totalmente open source. Também poderá levar Windows ou outra distro de Linux pois tem processador e chipset Intel. Reparem, isto por preços, que segundo algumas fontes, serão nos EUA de 299$ a 399$. Qualquer ultra portátil que se preze num fica por menos de 2000$. E este é mesmo ultra (920g ou 0,92Kg). Mas para resumir, a razão que me leva apostar aqui sobre isto é a de que só é possível este preço porque o software é open source, uma licença de Windows era mais de metade do preço do portátil... Simples é bom / Simple is good

Não tenho um iPod, e não sou um grande utilizador de música. No entanto, gosto de ouvir umas musicas de vez em quando e gosto de um Audio Player que me seja simples de usar. Com as novas lojas online e o ripar dos CD, já para não falar de "fontes alternativas" de MP3, etc's os Audio Player's de agora tornaram-se mega leitores que só falta fazer o pino. Pois descobri um (Decibel Audio Player ou DAP) que espero se mantenha assim como se apresenta. Simples! É para tocar musica e mais nada, qual gestão de play lists qual quê! Uma delícia. Espero num futuro próximo fazer uma mini-review a este Audio Player.

I don't have an iPod, and I'm not a big music user/owner. Yet I like to ear some music from time to time and I like a simple Audio Player, simple to use. With the new online stores, and ripping CD's, and not talking about the "alternative sources" of MP3's, etc. os Audio Player's became monsters that do everything. So I found one (Decibel Audio Player or DAP) that I hope it keeps as it is. Simple! It's for palying music and nothing else, no play lists management. Delicious! I hope in a near future to make a mini-review of it.

Open Office 3.0

Encontrei, através do Cibernet News, um artigo a falar sobre o que esperar no OpenOffice 3.0. O projecto é fazer no 3.0 um adversário do Outlook (um PIM completo) e não só. Muitos e melhores gráficos, PDF Import and Export, reports para o BASE, e muito mais. Na minha opinião, é uma pena não ter já estas opções :) .

I found, trough Cibernet News, an article talking about what to expect from OpenOffice 3.0. The aim is to produce a Outlook adversary but not only this, many and better graphics, PDF Import and Export, reports for Base, and much more. My opinion, it's sad not having this right now :) .

Phoronix, um bom site já agora, tem um artigo interessante sobre o consumo de energia num portátil de múltiplas distribuições de Ubuntu e que nos permite ter uma ideia da evolução (ou não) deste detalhe específico. Como eles próprios afirmam, dependendo do hardware pode existir diferentes resultados.

Ok. Este é o primeiro. É o primeiro blog que tenho, o primeiro post que faço. Vou ser curto para não ser chato logo no primeiro. Penso fazer deste blog um sitio onde vou expor pensamentos, opiniões, desabafos, reviews e artigos de outros que considere bons, reviews próprias de software, hardware?(quando comprar ou se alguém quiser disponibilizar), etc. Com um senão, todos terão sempre o Open Source como assunto base. Espero que gostem e visitem com frequência. Há! E vou tentar que seja sempre traduzido para Inglês também. Se não conseguir manter isto, logo se vê...

OK. This is the first. The first Blog that I have, the first post I make. I'll be short so that I dont bother you too much. I'm thinking of making this blog a place where I will expose my thoughts, opinions, relief's, reviews and articles of others wich I consider good ones, my own reviews of software, hardware?(when I buy some or if anyone spares some), etc. With a catch, everyone will have the Open Source as a baseline.
